Applications

The Common Application, or the Common App as it’s generally called, opens on August 1st. You can apply to more than 1,000 colleges and universities with the application portal, making it a very efficient tool.

Testing

The Scholastic Aptitude Test, more commonly referred to as the SATs, is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. It is administered by the College Board. Keep in mind that many universities outside of the US require the results as well. Make sure to register early as seats do fill up.

The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test used for college admissions. It is administered by ACT, a nonprofit organization of the same name. The ACT covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. It is accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United States as well as more than 225 universities outside of the US.

Khan Academy is world-class SAT prep that’s effective and 100% free. Encourage your teen to get a head start and practice today! Additionally, they offer free academic resources to support students from pre-K to post-graduate. Many IB and AP subjects are also covered.

Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form completed by current and prospective college students, both undergraduate and graduate. This program is run by the US Department of Education, the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. While FAFSA is designed for US citizens or Green Card holders, some colleges require foreign students to complete it to apply for aid.

The CSS Profile is an online application used by colleges and scholarship programs to award non-federal institutional aid. Over 250 colleges, universities, graduate schools, and scholarship awards require completion of the form. Non-US families who are seeking financial aid are required to complete this form at participating schools.

This financial aid application also opens on October 1st.

Language Testing

The Duolingo English Test is accepted by more than 5,000 educational institutions worldwide.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. It is accepted by more than 12,500 institutions worldwide.

The IELTS Academic test is designed to assess English-language skills, especially those skills that are relevant when studying at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. It is accepted by thousands of colleges and universities worldwide.
